Fixing a flow in a prototype takes hours; fixing the same flow after launch takes weeks. That gap is the whole argument for validating design decisions with real users before development starts. Research into how your users actually work, rather than how you assume they do, is what makes the difference.
UX and UI are different jobs
UX is structure and flow — what goes where and in what order — while UI is the visual and interactive layer on top. A beautiful UI over poor UX still frustrates people, whereas good UX with plain UI usually does not. We agree information architecture and user flows before any visual design begins, so the design has something solid to express.
Small test rounds, applied between them
Five to eight users per round typically surfaces the majority of usability problems, and several small rounds beat one large one because you fix issues between them. Interactive prototypes go in front of real people, and findings are applied before development begins rather than discovered in production. For an existing product, we start from analytics and support tickets to find where users genuinely struggle.
The deliverable is a system, not screens
The output is not a set of pretty screens but a documented design system: components, states, spacing rules and interaction patterns that developers implement consistently. Accessibility — contrast, focus order, target sizes and screen-reader flow — is considered during design, not audited afterwards. That system also speeds development, because developers stop guessing at spacing, states and edge cases.
