Why Are My Pages Not Being Indexed? A Technical SEO Checklist

Crawled, indexed and ranked are three separate stages
It helps to separate the steps a page moves through. First Google has to discover and crawl the URL; then it has to decide the page is worth keeping in the index; only then can it rank. Search Console's Pages report distinguishes these with statuses such as "Discovered - currently not indexed" and "Crawled - currently not indexed", and each points at a different cause. Discovered but not crawled usually signals a crawl budget or priority issue, whereas crawled but not indexed usually signals a quality, duplication or intent problem.
The usual reasons pages stay invisible
Missing indexation almost always traces to a short list of causes: a noindex tag or header left over from staging, conflicting canonicals, a robots.txt block, thin or duplicated content, or crawl budget consumed by low-value URLs. A robots.txt disallow stops crawling but does not by itself remove a page from the index, whereas a noindex tag can only be seen if the page is crawlable — so the two are sometimes in conflict. A full crawl cross-referenced with Search Console and server logs identifies which of these applies rather than leaving you guessing.
Thin, duplicate and near-identical pages get filtered
"Crawled - currently not indexed" is frequently Google's way of saying a page is not distinct or useful enough to earn a slot. Pages that duplicate one another, offer little beyond a template, or target the same intent as stronger pages you already have are quietly left out. The fix is rarely technical: consolidate overlapping pages, add genuine depth and purpose, and remove or noindex the thin filler so that what remains is clearly worth indexing. A smaller set of strong pages usually indexes far better than a large set of weak ones.
Get canonicals and duplication signals right
Canonical tags tell Google which version of similar pages to treat as primary, and getting them wrong is a common reason a page is skipped in favour of another. Watch for pages that canonicalise to the wrong URL, parameter and filter combinations that create endless near-duplicates, and http/https or www/non-www variants that split signals. Google treats the canonical as a strong hint rather than a command, so the surrounding signals — internal links, sitemaps and consistent linking — all need to point the same way for it to be respected.
Check what the crawler renders, not what you see
On JavaScript-heavy sites, what a search engine renders after scripts run often differs from what a user sees in the browser. Verifying the rendered output with the URL Inspection tool is essential, because content that only appears after a failed or slow render, or that depends on user interaction, may never make it into the index at all. If the important content and links are not present in the rendered HTML Google sees, no amount of on-page optimisation will help.
Help discovery with sitemaps, internal links and indexing requests
New or deep pages sometimes stay unindexed simply because Google struggles to find or prioritise them. A clean XML sitemap listing only canonical, indexable URLs, a logical internal linking structure that points to important pages, and fewer orphaned URLs all speed discovery. For individual priority pages you can use URL Inspection to request indexing, but treat it as a nudge rather than a fix — if the underlying page is thin, blocked or duplicated, requesting indexing repeatedly will not overcome it.
Core Web Vitals: a modest ranking factor, a real revenue one
Core Web Vitals are a confirmed ranking signal, though a modest one next to relevance, and they are not usually the reason a page fails to index at all. Their larger commercial effect is on conversion — slow pages lose visitors regardless of where they rank. Diagnosing field and lab performance to specific causes, such as render-blocking resources or unstable layout, gives you concrete fixes rather than generic advice to be faster.
Deliver fixes as tickets and verify them
Technical work only counts once it ships, so findings should arrive as specific recommendations with acceptance criteria, ordered by impact against effort. After implementation, use the URL Inspection tool and a re-crawl to confirm each fix actually worked, then watch the Pages report as coverage recovers. Indexing changes are not instant — it can take days or weeks for Google to recrawl and reassess — so patience after a correct fix is part of the process, not a sign it failed.
